What Is PRP Treatment For Hair Loss?

Platelet Rich Plasma is one of the newest procedures for hair rejuvenation. Platelet Rich Plasma, or often termed PRP is concentrated blood plasma (composition of blood) that contains approximately five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. Apart from the red and white blood cells, the blood also contains cells known as platelets. “If the hair follicles or hair roots are healthy, the growth of the hair is healthy. Hair follicles survive on the nutrition they get from blood supply”, says Julia Horton, the Director of the Therapeutic Scalp and Laser Clinic.

Is PRP Treatment Safe?

PRP Hair Treatment is a biological therapy and is safe, because only your own cells are being used to treat your hairloss. Prepared blood plasma is richer in platelets than normal blood. The blood plasma contains growth factors which have significant positive effects on hair growth. The platelet growth factors induce follicle stem cells to shift from a dormant state to an active state which starts the process of hair production. The platelet growth factors can “wake up” dormant hair follicles and begin the production of new hair. So this therapy gives strength to the existing hair, reduces hair loss and is likely to increase the actual number and quality of hairs by stimulating the stem cells.

How Does PRP Treatment Work?

The procedure is very similar to having a routine blood test performed at your doctor’s office. The blood is collected by our medical staff and placed in a machine called a centrifuge, where your blood is spun for approximately 15 minutes. When the centrifuge has stopped spinning, your blood components have now been separated. The PRP that contains abundant growth factors and stem cells is now ready to be applied to the scalp. Completed in about 90 minutes, you will be able to return to your normal activity almost immediately.

How Fast Does PRP Therapy Work For Hair Loss?

Generally, you can start seeing a benefit in six to nine months, but results may vary among each individual. Improved hair appearance may last two to three years, but then there will be a gradual return of the hair to its baseline without continued PRP therapy.
