What Is Anemia?


Anemia is a condition in which a person does not have enough red blood cells. This results in fatigue and damage to the body. If you are chronically tired, you may be anemic.
Anemia is a frequent feature of menopausal women and male hypogonadism and antiandrogenic therapies (drugs that lower testosterone after surgery for prostate cancer in which the testicles are removed). Older men and women with low testosterone are far more likely to be anemic than those with normal testosterone.

Louis’s Story

Louis was seventy-seven years old and in reasonably good health, except for well controlled atrial fibrillation. Louis complained,
” I am always tired, I give out so quickly when I try to do anything. My heart doctor told me it was my heart. But a friend of mine told me hormones helped him. My wife is not living, and I ‘d like to meet a woman – but I don’t have enough energy even if I was with a woman. I read a lot about keeping healthy. I know that low testosterone could cause all kinds of health problems. I know I’m not going to be young again, but I just want to have enough energy to enjoy the years I have left. “

Louis’s CBC showed a hemoglobin well below normal. His hematocrit was also low. He probably was not losing blood from his gut, but just not manufacturing enough in his bone marrow or spleen. With this type of anemia, the body may produce too few red blood cells or the blood cells may not function correctly. In either case, anemia can result.

It is interesting to see the reason a patient may have anemia listed as due to “old age” – as though getting old is a disease. Louis’s doctor knew he was anemic. He was told that his anemia was a result of aging. If his anemia were due to aging, the reason for anemia in old age was most likely due to the body not producing enough testosterone to stimulate the bone marrow to produce enough red blood cells.

When bio-identical testosterone is administered, the anemia of old age is cured. But, it is doubtful you have ever heard a doctor say that the reason a patient has anemia was secondary to testosterone deficiency. It would be almost impossible to find that an investigation for anemia in an older patient would include checking his testosterone level.

Louis was treated with bio-identical testosterone pellets. He felt much better within one month – but the real changes were evident by his thirds month. His hemoglobin and hematocrit were completely normal. His testosterone was 862 ng/dL at one month but still up to 527 ng/dL at three months. Louis noted, “I have more energy now. I walk each day and am beginning to do my own yard work. And I’ve been seeing a lady. We are s[ending more and more time together.”

Louis was given a small dose of testosterone pellets to keep his blood level up from the next three months. In more conversation, Louis said, “Actually, I have proposed to the lady I told you about.” He was given a bottle of Revive to give him a boost of confidence in the bedroom.

It is so interesting to note that a common list of causes for anemia includes: “Sickle cell anemia, iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin deficiency, bone marrow and stem cell problem abnormal uterine bleeding, bleeding from the stomach (ulcers or stomach cancer), anemia of old age, bleeding from the colon, pregnancy, Crohn’s disease, advanced kidney disease, Hypothyroidism, chemotherapy, alcohol abuse, lead poising and a myriad of other disease processes.”

But absent from the list is anemia caused by low testosterone. To doctors specializing in Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, the production of red blood cells is obviously directly related to testosterone. This is why with each visit da Complete Blood Count is done, especially in men. It is not healthy to have a hemoglobin or hematocrit (H&H) too low or too high. If the H&H is above normal, the patient should not have a treatment with testosterone until he donates blood or has blood removed in a lab and discarded.
