A Sexual Health and Wellness Center, Restorative Health Designs Hormone Therapy Just for You
In the last 20 or so years, you’ve probably seen a lot of health “news” about female hormone therapy replacement and other treatments for menopause.
Much of it has been unfairly negative press and has made people believe the misinformation out there about this very helpful medical treatment. Instead of getting the hormone therapy they need, many women have done without and have needlessly suffered the side effects that come with changing hormones as they age.
At Restorative Health, we’re hormone therapy and menopause experts. We’re here to share truthful information about hormone replacement therapy and menopause, and why you might want to consider making an appointment at one of our locations in Georgia, Kansas, Ohio, Nebraska, or Missouri.
MYTH: Hormone replacement therapy increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer in women.
A 2002 study seemed to indicate that this was the case, particularly in women who took a certain type of estrogen and synthetic progestin for more than five years.
However, the study focused mostly on women over aged 60, not newly menopausal women – those who benefit greatly from hormone replacement therapy (HRT).
In fact, the latest research now suggests that for women under age 60, not taking HRT can increase the risk of developing osteoporosis or heart disease.
MYTH: There’s only one type of female hormone replacement therapy.
The modern woman can choose from more than 50 types of HRT, with their doctor’s guidance, including bioidentical hormone replacement containing estradiol and progesterone. HRT comes in oral formulations, topical creams, and even transdermal or vaginal forms.
MYTH: The FDA has not approved bioidentical hormone therapy.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved bioidentical hormone formulations. The FDA notes that a bioidentical hormone product has the same benefits and risks as other FDA-approved hormone therapies produced by pharmaceutical companies.
MYTH: Women with early-onset menopause shouldn’t undergo hormone replacement.
Women who start HRT within 10 years of menopause have a 30 percent lower mortality rate and 48 percent lower risk of heart disease compared to women who don’t. And more than two-thirds of women begin menopause before they reach 50 years old. In short, female hormone replacement therapy can be lifesaving.
MYTH: Menopause symptoms aren’t that uncomfortable!
Menopausal women endure symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats, poor sleep quality, changes in urinary frequency, vaginal dryness, the onset of osteoporosis, and in some cases, psychological changes.
Anyone who says menopause symptoms aren’t that difficult to endure may just be lucky they didn’t experience the full spectrum! No two women are alike. Instead of suffering these symptoms, you can get treatments for menopause to help you feel more like yourself.
MYTH: HRT massively increases your risk of ovarian cancer.
Although there could be a slightly increased risk of certain types of ovarian cancers associated with hormone replacement, it’s a very small elevated chance. In fact, it equates to just one extra case of ovarian cancer for every 1,000 hormone replacement therapy users as compared to the normal rate of ovarian cancer.
MYTH: Hormone therapy causes dementia.
It’s true that your hormones can affect your cognitive functioning. However, based on current evidence, HRT is unlikely to increase the risk of dementia in women who start the therapy when they’re younger than 60 years old.
MYTH: HRT won’t return your sex drive to normal.
Studies seem to indicate that women taking HRT see a return of their sex drive and a relief of vaginal dryness that can make intimacy difficult. The estrogen or DHEA in HRT are responsible for reversing these symptoms.
What is Hormone Replacement Therapy anyway?
Hormone replacement therapy is a medication containing female hormones that must be prescribed by a medical doctor or other advanced medical provider. This medication replaces the estrogen your body ceases making when you reach menopause and can treat common menopausal symptoms.
